Professor Dr. Mohammad H. Jamal

Professor Mohammad H. Jamal is a Professor of Surgery at Kuwait University, Previous Chairman of the Transplant Department, and Consultant in Metabolic, Bariatric, Upper Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery. Throughout his career, he has combined excellence in clinical care, academic leadership, research, and surgical education, with a commitment to advancing healthcare in Kuwait and internationally.

Professor Jamal graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Aberdeen before completing his General Surgery residency at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He subsequently completed fellowship training in Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgery at McGill University, followed by a second fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic, Robotic and Bariatric Surgery at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He is also board-certified in Obesity Medicine by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, reflecting his comprehensive approach to the medical and surgical management of obesity.

His clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of metabolic and bariatric surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, revisional bariatric surgery, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, intragastric balloon therapy, and evidence-based obesity medicine. In addition, he performs advanced minimally invasive surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, abdominal wall hernias, and complex hepatobiliary, pancreatic, adrenal, and splenic diseases, as well as emergency general surgery.

Professor Jamal has played a pivotal role in transforming surgical care in Kuwait. In 2018, he led the team that performed Kuwait's first successful liver transplant, establishing the country's liver transplant program and earning the Pioneer in Clinical Services Award from the Kuwait Surgical Society. In the same year, he performed Kuwait's first laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure), introducing minimally invasive surgery for pancreatic cancer and expanding access to advanced surgical techniques.

Equally passionate about education, Professor Jamal founded Kuwait's Surgical Foundation Program, providing structured training for junior surgical residents. Under his leadership, the program became the first surgical training program outside Canada to receive accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada—an important milestone in surgical education within the region. He also established Kuwait's first Bariatric Surgery Fellowship Program, training the next generation of minimally invasive and metabolic surgeons.

Believing that exceptional surgeons must also be exceptional educators, Professor Jamal earned a Master's degree in Medical Education with a focus on curriculum development. He continues to mentor medical students, residents, and fellows while contributing to the advancement of surgical education nationally and internationally.

Professor Jamal's research focuses on obesity, metabolic surgery, fatty liver disease (MAFLD/MASLD), hepatobiliary surgery, pancreatic surgery, and surgical innovation. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters and serves as principal investigator on multiple competitively funded research projects supported by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS). His work has contributed to advancing the understanding of obesity, metabolic disease, and liver health while improving patient outcomes.

His academic contributions have been recognized through numerous national and international awards. These include the Best Resident Teacher Award from McGill University, the Best Research Award from the Canadian Surgery Forum, recognition among the Top Five Scientific Abstracts at the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association World Congress, and the 2022 Jaber Al-Ahmad Prize for Young Researchers in Medical Sciences, awarded by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) in recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions.
